First of all, I woke up to “A por ellos”. One of the fight songs for la selección española. They’re starting a bit early don’t you think? The game doesn’t start til 8:30pm! This morning we went to the Rastro. It was a long hot walk there with Courtney and Taylor but really fun. I bought a bandera to sport for the final tonight. I also bought some real genie pants and a purse for mom. Courtney bought a huge yellow and red wig and Spanish flag gafas, then she wore them around the city as we all receive strange looks and a few Spanish cheers. Later we headed back and ate lunch in Picasso Park and had some coke and patatas bravas at a local restaurant. Then we went back to our house for some rest and to watch The Parent Trap again!
Later, we got ready to leave dressed in our crazy España gear and headed for the Plaza Mayor. The atmosphere was crazy. Cars honking the whole way and cheers from every window. We got to our usual spot and every table was full but thankfully we talked to the manager we see every week and he said, “You are already late? We get table for you.” He loves us just that much. So from out of nowhere he brings us out a table and we got to enjoy the game from our usual spot. The game was nuts because it went into overtime tied at zero. The sweet old Spanish people next to us explained to us how overtime worked. In the last 5 minutes of overtime, little Iniesta scored the winning and only goal! Viva España! WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS!!! I can’t believe I was here when Spain made history! It was so fun to celebrate by having a mosh pit in the plaza mayor and making a victory lap with my huge flag. Afterwards, we jumped in a fountain to celebrate along with every other Spaniard in the city. Then we went out dancing til 3am and trust me this was calling it quits early on in the night. Apparently people still hadn’t gone home at 8:30 this morning. It was so fun to celebrate the CAMPEONES DE LA COPA MUNDIAL!!
